Will your child start school in September 2027?

You should apply for your child to start in Reception in the school year your child turns 4. So if your child was born between 1st September 2022 and 31st August 2023 and they are now 4 (or will have their 4th birthday by the end of August) now is the time to start looking for the right school for your child and your family… maybe that could be Naburn?

How to apply

When Naburn Church of England Primary School became part of The Education Alliance family of schools in 2023, the Trust became our Admissions Authority. Admissions to our school are dealt with by the admissions team at the City of York.

Please read the Guide for Parents when applying for a school place, as it contains key information on school admissions. You can also find the Guide to School Catchment Areas online – keep checking on the City of York Council Admissions site to keep updated with key dates throughout the year.

You can apply online at york.gov.uk/admissions from 12th September 2026. With an online application you will receive an email confirming submission of your application. Please remember to submit your application by the closing date

If you can’t apply online you can request a paper Primary Application Form by calling 01904 551 554. Forms are also distributed to primary schools and nurseries in the York area.

Please note that applying early does not give any priority; to have the best chance of your application being successful you should complete and submit your application by the deadline which is the 15th January 2027, although applications can still be made after this date.

National Offer Day, when families will be notified about school placements, is in April.

Do you live outside the City of York area?

When applying to start primary school, your application must be made to the local authority in which you live, that you currently pay your council tax to, even if your school of preference is not in that area.

You apply through your local council even if you’re applying for schools in another council area, then they will forward your application to the relevant local authority – in our case, the City of York Council. So you are able and welcome to apply to Naburn Church of England Primary School, even if your address is outside the CYC area!

Admission Appeals

Appeals for ‘in-year school admission requests are normally held within 30 school day of the date your appeal is received.  You will be notified of the date of your appeal no later than ten school days before the appeal is due to take place.

Appeals for entry into Reception or Year 7 to start primary or secondary school for the first time – what are called ‘normal’ admission requests – are usually held in the summer term after parents/carers have been notified of the refusal of a school place, commonly in June and July.

Starting school in September 2027 – Appeals Information

For applications to start a primary school for the first time in September 2027, appeal forms should be submitted by the parent/carers by 21 May 2027 and appeals are planned to be held in June and July 2027.

For applications to start a secondary school for the first time in September 2027, appeal forms should be submitted by the parent / carers by 16 April 2027 and appeals are planned to be held between May and June 2027.
