Welcome to the Year 5/6 pages

Spring 2010

Our main topic this half term is Settlements.  Alongside this we will cover a unit of work on drugs education, as part of this the children will have a morning at Rufforth school participating in a drama based workshop. We are involved in a global project through York St John University on sustainable living related to homes, which links in well.

In Geography, we'll be finding out about what constitutes a settlement and how they vary or are similar around the world, this will enable us to focus on our link school in Ghana and other places the children may have experience of.

In History, we'll be finding out; why the Vikings settled in York and what evidence we have which shows this. To help with this we are booked for a visit to The Dig on Monday 11th January.

In ICT, we'll be using relevant websites for research and to record information, and how local and international communities live and work together.

In science we’ll be finding out about materials used to construct dwellings.

The children will be involved in a project called Career Pathways, which began last term and there will be some more work taking place led by Steph Taylor.

We will also embrace Fair Trade Fortnight, which happens immediately after half term, this gives us further opportunity to look at links with Ghana and learn about globalisation and how this affects what we each own, how countries and individuals are affected by globalisation and some of the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation.

As you may already be aware it is our half term for tennis at David Lloyd again, which will take place as usual on Friday afternoons.

By the second half of the term Year 6 will have more homework to do as part of their SATS preparation.
