Welcome to the Year 5/6 pages

Spring 2009

This term we are following the topic of our locality, Naburn. I plan to make it history based the first half term and geography based the second half term.

This will involve local walks around the village, which will also link with art and English.

Part of the English work will focus on biographies, reading some and looking at what we can learn about character, we will listen to some from people who have lived in Naburn and there will be some writing, both real and fictional.

We will look at newspapers and do some journalistic writing.

We also plan to make a book about Naburn.

The “talks” this term is about “Where I live.”

Maths will cover negative numbers, rounding numbers, decimals, percentages and fractions.

The science topic is Changing Materials and I would like to incorporate some weekly cooking as part of this.

Our class are doing tennis at Next Generation for the first half term and we have entered a hockey tournament in the second half term and I have booked some sessions to use the astro pitch at the university. There will also be the tag rugby tournament.

P.S.H.E. is on Relationships and we will explore feelings and how relationships are portrayed in the media.

Mrs Stephenson Barr will teach the class on Tuesday mornings, doing R.E. , music and ICT.

Mrs Dennison will continue to work with the children on Thursday mornings, teaching French and P.E.

The SATS preparation for Year 6 will start by doing a fortnightly writing homework, then after half term we will focus more with more homework and revision in lessons in school.
