Our Poetry

Great Hearts

Poems inspired by whales, dolphins and sharks, after reading poetry by Zoe Bailey, Kit Wright andJudith Nicholls. We wanted to use some some similes (it is like...) and some metaphor (it is a...).

Deep Shark

The blue black eyed speed boat
Shot to it's deepest hiding place
Waits for a flash of prey in the distance
In a flash of fish life
The killer beast loaded his jaws and
His razor teeth skimmed the heart of the warm
Blooded beastlike a knife drawn from its sheath

Blood roamed the ocean as the poison dart shot away

Silent & Deadly

It saws through the forest like a wolf
destroying any thing in its path.
But half human but cold blooded.
It tries to look like a whale
but never gets away with it.
Its teeth like razors sawing through the water
  everyone knows the howl of
  The Sea!

A Glimpse of Shere Khan

Big cat poems inspired by 'A Glimpse of Shere Khan' by Chris Wallace-Crabbe. We wanted to use some alliteration, some rhyme, some made-up words to blend ideas together and for the pace of the poem to increase at the end.

The Furry Animal

  The Jungle was still
  A striped figure snuffing
  through the grass
  Black and orange coloured

strips slowly past

I could almost smell the

  sense of stripes.

  Trees hanging over us like
  green feathers

  The ground shook underneath
  our feet
  The cats face was light
the site of his nose was

  frightening

  suddenly it pounced!

The Beast of the Beasties

In a vast open Asian plain

We were plodding along the

patient path before

I saw the Beady eyes.

The Baishirgripped my arm.

I held my Breath and when

I opened my eyes I just heard

the snuffle of the grass then

  shsss

  It was gone
